In most cases, Reddit administrators are remiss to shut them down, and the site’s top stories, which are generated by a user voting system, regularly have questionable – if not offensive - posts among them. While Reddit’s commitment to moderation-free online discourse is often hugely effective and positive, it can backfire: the site has several active subreddits - like message board threads - dedicated to misogyny, sexism, racism and worse. “The fact that someone could come here, debase and degrade people based on race, religion, ethnicity or sexual preference because they “have a right” to do so without worry of any kind of moderation is sending the wrong message, in my humble opinion,” Shatner continued, despite many Redditors rushing to defend the site as a free-speech zone.ĭespite his criticisms, Shatner says he intends to maintain his Reddit membership, and hopes to become a regular, active contributor to the site.
